Parrotfish

About the Parrotfish

Crucial for reef health — they eat algae that would smother coral. Bite off chunks of coral with beak-like teeth, digest the algae, and excrete sand. A single parrotfish produces 90 kg of sand per year. Can change sex multiple times during their life. Some species build mucus cocoons to sleep in.
